Rotary Encoders
A rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position of a shaft or axle to an analogue or digital code, making it an angle transducer. Rotary encoders are used in many applications that require precise position feedback including industrial controls, robotics, automation systems, machine tools, etc.
Encoders can be used to track position within one rotation or over a required (even endless) number of rotations, depending on the requirement.
Linear Encoders
A linear encoder is a sensor, transducer or read-head paired with a scale that encodes position. The sensor reads the scale in order to convert the encoded position into an analogue or digital signal, which can then be decoded into position by a digital readout (DRO), PLC, motion controller, PC, drive unit, etc.
Motion/speed can be determined by change in position over time. Linear encoder technologies include optical, magnetic, inductive, capacitive and eddy current. Linear encoders are used in metrology instruments and high precision machining tools ranging from digital calipers to coordinate measuring machines.
Both rotary and linear encoders are typically available with either absolute and incremental (relative) position output.
