Stepper Motors

A stepper motor (or step motor / stepping motor) is a brushless, synchronous electric motor that can divide a full rotation into a large number of steps. The motor's position can be controlled precisely without a feedback device (known as open-loop control), as long as the motor is carefully sized for the application.

Stepper motors operate differently from DC motors, which rotate when voltage is applied to their terminals. Stepper motors, effectively, have multiple "toothed" electromagnets arranged around a central gear-shaped piece of iron. The electromagnets are energised in turn by an external control circuit, such as a micro-controller, to provide rotation.
