Solution to the weight of the fish

Puzzle Corner-2

In the last edition of Motor Technology News there was a puzzle in which you had to calculate the weight of a fish given only a few basic facts. Well we knew our readers were pretty clever people and we were right as dozens of you wrote in with the correct answer.

A trout's tail weighs eight pounds. Its head weighs as much as the tail and one-half of the body combined, and the body weighs as much as the head and tail combined. What does the whole trout weigh?

The solution is: t=8, h= 8 + (b/2), and b = 8 + h.

So, h = 8 + ((8+h)/2), or, h/2 = 8 + (8/2) = 12. Therefore, h = 24, and b = 8 + 24 = 32. So, the whole trout equals t + b + h = 8+32+24 = 64, so the whole trout weighs 64 pounds.

Everyone who sent in a correct answer with their address details has been sent a dictionary of electric drive technology worth £14.99 with our compliments.
